New planet discovery excites scientists: the discovery of a new planet 600 light years away with roughly the right temperature for plant and animal habitation is causing a buzz in the science community.  Though much larger than Earth, scientists haven’t ruled out the possibility of life being discovered.

A newly discovered planet is eerily similar to Earth and is sitting outside Earth’s solar system in what seems to be the ideal place for life, except for one hitch. It is a bit too big.

The planet is smack in the middle of what astronomers call the Goldilocks zone, that hard to find place that is not too hot, not too cold, where water, which is essential for life, does not freeze or boil. And it has a shopping mall-like surface temperature of near 72 degrees, scientists say.

The planet’s confirmation was announced Monday by NASA along with other discoveries by its Kepler telescope, which was launched on a planet-hunting mission in 2009.

That is the first planet confirmed in the habitable zone for Kepler, which already had found Earth-like rockyplanets elsewhere. Twice before astronomers have announced a planet found in that zone, but neither has been as promising.

“This is a phenomenal discovery in the course of human history,” Geoff Marcy of University of California, Berkeley, one of the pioneers of planet-hunting outside Earth’s solar system, said in an email. “This discovery shows that we Homo sapiens are straining our reach into the universe to find planets that remind us of home. We are almost there.”

The new planet, named Kepler-22b, has key aspects it shares with Earth. It circles a star that could be the twin of Earth’s sun and at just about the same distance. The planet’s year of 290 days is even close to Earth’s. It probably has water and rock.

The only trouble is the planet’s a bit big for life to exist on the surface. The planet is about 2.4 times the size of Earth. It could be more like the gas-and-liquid Neptune with only a rocky core and mostly ocean.

“It’s so exciting to imagine the possibilities,” said Natalie Batalha, the Kepler deputy science chief.

Floating on that “world completely covered in water” could be like being on an Earth ocean and “it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that life could exist in such an ocean,” Batalha said in a phone interview.

Kepler cannot find life itself, just where the conditions might be right for it to thrive. And when astronomers look for life elsewhere, they are talking about everything ranging from microbes to advanced intelligence that can be looking back at us.

So far the Kepler telescope has spotted 2,326 candidate planets outside Earth’s solar system with 139 of them potentially habitable ones. Even though the confirmed Kepler-22b is a bit big, it is smaller than most of the other candidates. It is closest to Earth in size, temperature and star than either of the two previously announced planets in the zone.

The confirmation of one of two, though, has been disputed. The latest discovery has been confirmed several ways, including by two other telescopes.

This year, a European team of astronomers said they had confirmed another planet in the habitable zone, but that one was hot and barely on the inside edge of the habitable zone.

For Marcy, who is on the Kepler team, the newest planet is a smidgen too large. But, “that smidgen makes all the difference,” he said.

Because its size implies that it is closer to Neptune in composition than Earth, “I would bet my telescope that there is no hard, rocky surface to walk on,” Marcy said.

Chief Kepler scientist William Borucki said he thinks the planet is somewhere between Earth and gas-and-liquid Neptune, but that it has a lot of rocky material. It is in a size range that scientists do not really know anything about. Measurements next summer may help astronomers have a better idea of its makeup, he said.

The planet is 600 light years away. Each light year is 5.9 trillion miles. It would take a space shuttle about 22 million years to get there.

Kepler spots a planet when it passes in front of its star. NASA requires three of those sightings before it begins to confirm it as a planet. Borucki said the third sighting for 22b happened a year ago, just before the telescope shut down for a while. It took several months to finish the confirmation.

“It’s a great gift,” Borucki said. “We consider this sort of our Christmas planet.”

Kim Richards is finally getting the help many believe she so desperately needs.

Several insiders confirm to Us Weekly that the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, 47, has checked into an undisclosed rehab facility; Entertainment Tonight first reported the news of Kim’s treatment.

Though Bravo declined to comment, Kim’s costar Adrienne Maloof tells Us Weekly: “I wish her well. It’s a step in the right direction.”

Maloof isn’t the only one rooting for the former child star, who briefly sought treatment in mid-2010 after her sister Kyle, 42, called her an “alcoholic” on national television.

“Kyle is doing okay. Even though Kathy [Hilton] is not on the show, I know that they are close,” a source tells Us of the tight-knit sisters. “It must be very difficult for Kyle and Kathy and their families.”

Adds a second insider: “The only way Kim is going to be able to move on and enjoy her life is to free herself of these demons.”

During season two of the Bravo hit, Kim’s erratic behavior caused costar Brandi Glanville to accuse of her being “wasted out of her f-cking mind” during game night at Dana Wilkey’s house.

Maloof’s husband, Dr. Paul Nassif, attributed Kim’s slurred speech to a bad combination of prescription pills: Lexapro (anti-anxiety), Trazadone (antidepressant) and Topamax (an anti-seizure medication that can also be used to treat alcoholism).

“Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Kim Richards has checked into rehab again, reports say.

The 47-year-old mother of four, whose half-sister is Kathy Hilton, is seeking treatment at an undisclosed location, reports Entertainment Tonight. It’s also unclear what Richards is seeking treatment for, though she has admitted to struggling with alcoholism in the past.

Richards’ substance abuse issues were revealed in the first season of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” when she got in a fight with her sister, Kyle Richards. “You act like an insane person,” her sister said. “You are a liar and sick and an alcoholic. That’s right. I said it and now everybody knows.”

Shortly after the fight, Kim Richards’ family checked her into rehab. After leaving the facility, Richards resumed filming the Bravo show. But questions about her dependencies surfaced once again when new “Real Housewife” Brandi Glanville accused Richards of doing “crystal meth in the bathroom all night.”

Richards defended herself against the allegation via Twitter.

“For someone who doesn’t know me personally to outright accuse me of using crystal meth leaves me bewildered … Drug abuse isn’t something you just throw around as a jab,” she wrote. “I told the others that night, that I had just left my doctor’s for treatment of my anxiety and panic disorder … He had given me medication for it … I’ll be the first to admit that I have struggled in the past with certain vices; but I have never in my life, EVER, used crystal meth. I have discussed openly my issues with alcohol. As many of you know, sobriety is a lifetime process.”

Before becoming a “Real Housewife,” Richards was a child actress, starring in Disney’s “Escape to Witch Mountain” and guest starring on series like “Diff’rent Strokes,” “The Love Boat” and “The Dukes of Hazzard.” More recently, she played Christina Ricci’s mother in the film “Blake Snake Moan.”

Lonely Planet has announced the launch of a new iPhone app which combines content from its best-selling guidebook brand with that of its competitors.

Wenzani launched December 5 and is described as the first app of its kind to combine content from multiple sources with socially-curated recommendations, providing travelers with a broad range of information on a destination.

Wenzani’s content is provided when users choose who they want to ‘follow’ to get their travel information — the names available include a stellar lineup of brands such as Lonely Planet, Frommer’s Travel, DK Eyewitness, BBC Travel, Time Out and Hearst.

The notable absentee is Rough Guides, which made its own appearance a year ago in a not dissimilar app called Whatser, which also uses ‘following’ functionality to allow users to explore what’s around them, recently opening the door for other brands such as Heineken and G-Star Raw to suggest places to users.

For now, Wenzani seems to work on a more personal level, allowing users to follow individual guidebook authors and also integrating with social media networks, allowing users to connect with their friends and have more personalized ‘guidebook’ entries displayed against the professional content where social media contacts have added it.

Lonely Planet says that in the future, Wenzani will become even smarter, filtering activities and recommendations by factors such as weather and time of day, and whether the user is a local or a tourist, to offer the best suggestions in real time.

For now, the app is free, but the number of downloads will be limited to 100,000 while the product is still in a beta stage before further updates next year.
